M9, also known as Métropole Television, is the most profitable private national Roterlanese television channel and the third most watched television network in the country. M9 is the head channel of the Média17 media empire that owns several TV channels, magazines, publications, movie production and media-related firms etc. It is owned by RTL Group.

TV9 was launched on March 1st, 1986 by a consortium led by radio broadcaster NRJ, film studio Gaumont and advertising agencies Publicis and Gilbert Gross after its bid winning one of the two commercial broadcasting licenses on January 28th of the same year, originally intended to operate under a 18-year concession contract.

On February 2nd, 1987, TV9 controversially lost its broadcasting license after the then-Government led by Rally for the Republic (who won the March 1986 legislative elections) undoing the audiovisual achievements and projects of its preceding Governments led by the Socialist Party to favor the Métropole Télévision consortium led by Byonnaise des Eaux and Monasbourg-based CLT (owners of radio station RTL), leading to TV9 to cease its broadcasts on February 28th of the same year and M9 to start its broadcasts the day after.
